Tamiya "Tigre Royal" (King Tiger) 1/16 Radio-Controlled Tank
Tamiya 56018
Tamiya continues to expand its line of 1/16-scale radio-controlled tanks. The fourth complete kit to be released is that of the German King Tiger heavy tank. Not only can the model move forward, backward, and turn with great power, but the turret can also swivel, and the 88 mm gun can be raised or lowered. To simulate firing the main gun and the front machine gun, flashing lights illuminate while a sound is emitted.
The engine sound was recorded, with the assistance of the French museum in Saumur, using a genuine Maybach HL230-P30 engine from the world’s only King Tiger still in working condition. Not only were all phases of the engine noise (from idle to full throttle) meticulously recorded, but so were all the metallic clattering sounds of the tank’s tracks.
Zimmerit Coating: Realistic and Easy to Apply
During the second half of World War II, Zimmerit coating was applied to German tanks to protect them against the threat of magnetic mines. For this kit, the Zimmerit coating has been reproduced using unique embossed decals. Thanks to these decals, you can now accurately and easily recreate a late-war King Tiger.
About the German King Tiger (Henschel Turret)
The German King Tiger heavy tank made its debut in 1944, during World War II. The front armor of the hull was 150mm thick, while the side armor reached 80mm; it was powered by a 700cv Maybach HL230-P30 engine. Henschel and Porsche submitted competing turret prototypes. The first fifty tanks produced were equipped with a Porsche turret, while subsequent tanks were fitted with the production turret designed by Henschel, which featured numerous improvements over the initial model. The King Tiger was armed with an 88 mm, 71-caliber gun, powerful enough to penetrate 150 mm of armor at a distance of 2,000m. Between the start of production in the summer of 1944 and March 1945, 440 units were built. Due to the devastation wrought by the King Tiger during the final German offensive on the Ardennes Front in December 1944, Allied forces advancing on Berlin continued to fear the King Tiger until the very last day of the war.

Realistic engine sounds
2 types of engine start-up sounds
In addition to using an electric starter under normal conditions, the King Tiger’s engine was started with a crank in cold weather to conserve battery power. This model faithfully reproduces both procedures. When you turn on the transmitter first, the hand-crank starting sound plays; however, if you turn on the receiver first, the electric starting sound plays. Now you can feel like a member of the tank crew by choosing which procedure to follow based on the ambient temperature.
Recording the Actual Engine Sound
The only King Tiger still in working condition is on display at the Armored Vehicle Museum in Saumur, France. To record the actual sound of the Maybach engine, the team from Tamiya traveled halfway around the world to Saumur. Not only were all phases of the engine’s sound—from idle to full throttle—meticulously recorded, but so were all the metallic clanking sounds of the tank’s tracks, as well as the sound of cranking the engine and the electric motor. Hearing the sound of the 700 cv Maybach V12 engine as you drive your King Tiger will give you an even more gripping sense of realism.
