The Mercedes-Benz W196 R, the legendary Silver Arrow
The W196 R marked Mercedes-Benz’s return to Grand Prix racing in 1954. It won the Formula 1 World Championship in both 1954 and 1955 with Juan Manuel Fangio. It was ahead of its time: a 2.5-litre straight-eight, direct fuel injection and desmodromic valves. On 16 July 1955, at the British Grand Prix at Aintree, Stirling Moss started from pole in car No. 12. He went on to win his first Formula 1 race in front of his home crowd, leading a historic Mercedes one-two-three-four.
