Ship Modeling Toolkit

Artesania Latina 27006N

  • 27 tools—everything you need to build a wooden ship model, with nothing extra. The essential tools for ship modeling, all gathered in a hard-shell case, ready to use.
  • 6 tools designed or adapted by Artesanía Latina that you won’t find in a generic kit.
  • Two thermoformed trays: each tool has its own dedicated slot for storage and transport.
  • Hard-shell case measuring 31 × 25.5 × 5.5 cm — 1 kg — stands upright and can be carried with one hand.
  • Compatible with any wooden ship model, regardless of brand.

A tool kit for wooden ship modeling—and not just any tool kit

The difference lies as much in what it contains as in what it doesn’t. No Phillips-head screwdriver. No open-end wrench. Nothing that isn’t used for building a wooden ship hull.

Six of these twenty-seven ship model-making tools were designed or adapted by the model makers at Artesanía Latina, for one simple reason: these tools specific to ship model-making either didn’t exist or weren’t well suited for use in a generic kit. The folding tool, the magnetic nail setter, the No. 5 cutter, the modeler’s hammer, the sanding block, and the long-shanked cord threader come straight from the workbench. The cord threader comes from the world of sewing: Artesania Latina lengthened its shaft so it could reach a cord inside a sheepskin cap. These are the tools that set a modeler’s toolkit apart from the rest.

Contents

Top blister pack: the hull

Bending, cutting, nailing, sanding. The tools of the trade—the ones you reach for most often—are organized within easy reach as soon as you open the lid.

  • Manual bending tool (bending pliers, plank bender) — Exclusive to Artesania-Latina
    • It scores the inner surface of the strip by applying pressure. Moisten the wood first—always: the grain will then accept the curve rather than resist it. On a large boat, where the strakes number in the dozens, it works in tandem with our electric bending machine, sold separately; on a standard-sized hull, it suffices on its own. French retailers and forums also call it a “bending pliers”: it’s the same tool.
    • hullPlanking, strakes, and pre-bent pieces
  • No. 5 Cutter with Reinforced Handle (blade + guard) — Exclusive to Artesania-Latina
    • Solid ABS handle with internal metal reinforcement. You can apply firm pressure—cutting a slat, detaching a piece from a laser-cut board—without the tool bending or twisting in your hand. 0.5 mm thick carbon steel blade.
    • Cutting slats, removing joints, chamfering
  • Magnetic Nailer (Nail Pusher) — Exclusive to Artesania-Latina
    • AL planking nails are made of brass-plated iron: brass-colored exterior, magnetic core. The nailer holds them in place on its own. Position, drive, and finish with a hammer—your fingers never go under the head.
    • Nailing the planking while the glue dries
  • Cutting Pliers
    • The essential tool you’ll rarely put down. It cuts wooden battens, brass wire up to 1.5 or even 2 mm in diameter, and the heads of protruding nails.
    • Hull, deck hardware, mast
  • Model-maker’s hammer — Exclusive to Artesania-Latina
    • Small, slim, and durable. Two heads: a round one for general work, and a more tapered one for delicate parts and tight spaces, such as between two spars.
    • Nailing, pins, fitting
  • Sanding Block — Exclusive to Artesania-Latina
    • One flat side, one curved end. It conforms to the contours of a hull, from the curve of the bow to the straight surfaces of the deck.
    • Planing the planking, fitting the frames, decks

Lower blister: precision, finishing, and rigging

Everything comes down to tenths of a millimeter: measuring, drilling, clamping, adjusting, rigging, painting.

  • 15 cm stainless steel ruler
    • It measures. Its edge is also used to neatly fold photo-etched parts: place it down, press, and the angle is sharp. Graduated in millimeters and inches, it works with both metric plans and those used by American modelers.
Reading the plan, marking lengths, photo-etching
  • Stainless steel tweezers, fine curved tip (protector included)
  • Hold a part, position a nail, pick up a piece of rigging wire. Fine and curved: the shape that can do the most.
    • Deck fittings, rigging, details
  • Mini hand drill (double drill chuck)
    • There’s no such thing as a wooden model boat that doesn’t require drilling: small diameters, fragile parts, hard-to-reach areas. When done by hand, the speed is slow but the control is total—the wood won’t splinter. Double chuck, Ø 0.50 to 3.00 mm.
    • Pilot holes, portholes, wire passages
  • Set of 6 HSS drill bits
    • The six diameters actually used in ship model building: 0.50 / 0.75 / 1.00 / 1.25 / 1.50 / 2.00 mm. Compatible with other Artesanía Latina mini hand drills.
    • Hull, deck, rigging
  • Wire-cutting shears
    • No sailboat is complete without rigging, so no building session is complete without them. Shrouds, halyards, gun rigging: cut flush with the knot, with one hand, without fraying the thread.
    • Standing and running rigging
  • Long-shank threader — Adapted by Artesania-Latina
    • Originally a sewing tool—it’s used to thread a needle. Extended for rigging: the rod retrieves a 0.15 or 0.25 mm rope from a pulley or a sheep’s head already in place, where neither fingers nor a needle can reach.
    • Rigging, pulleys, cleats
  • 2 acrylic paintbrushes
    • The flat brush for large surfaces— hull, and deck. The round brush for anything requiring precision.
    • Paint, varnish, patinas
  • 2 diamond files (flat and half-round)
    • They cut through wood, die-cast parts, and photo-etched parts without clogging.
    • Fitting parts, metal finishing
  • 5 No. 5 replacement blades
    • A dull blade tears the wood instead of cutting it. Compatible with Artesanía Latina No. 5 cutters.
    • All cutting steps
