Apart from Columbus's logbook, Spanish literature offers no precise information on the two caravels that accompanied the Santa Maria in the expedition. La Niña and La Pinta were originally caravels equipped with lateen sails.
They are known to have belonged to the Pinzon brothers, who took part in the expedition as captains.
In the Canary Islands, La Pinta was refitted with square sails. This operation also required the complete replacement of the mast, and took four weeks.
Christopher Columbus always called his flagship "Nao", while the other two ships in his fleet were simple caravels for him.
