The Calella, the boat that lit up the sea
In the early 20th century, the fishermen of Calella on the Catalan coast went out at night aboard the bot de llum, the “light boat”. About five metres long and crewed by two men, it had a single job: to light up the sea. Its gas lamps drew sardines and mackerel towards the drift nets. To keep anything from blocking the light, even the rudder was worked by ropes. Two large stabilisers reduced rolling in the waves.
