Following a public edict of August 20, 1869, on the 30th of the same month the contract for the construction of the tramway system in Dersaadet was signed. Five months later, on February 18, 1870, the "Istanbul Tramway Company" was founded.
In 1908, the "Tunel" line was opened and later joined by the Tram Company consortium, and the connection to Taksim Square was activated. Both the company and the line underwent various vicissitudes, including the First World War, until June 1939, when it was nationalized and transferred to IETT, which manages it to this day.
In the 1960s, all tramway lines in Istanbul were closed, and it was not until December 29, 1990, that the Taksim-Tunel line was reopened as a tourist tramway, although today it is a means of transport in the city.
