Assemble step by step this magnificent kit model of the AEC Type B bus. It will provide you with long and wonderful moments of creative leisure, as you recreate a faithful replica of the original vehicle with all the details of the bus.
Type B buses were built in Walthamstow to replace Type X buses. The Type B had a capacity of 34 people, 16 inside and 18 on the uncovered upper deck, and is considered the first mass-produced bus. It began carrying passengers in 1911. By 1913, some 2,500 had entered service.
It was designed by Frank Searle, who was LGOC's chief engineer. It had a wooden frame, steel wheels, a worm gear and a chain case. Its maximum speed was 16 kilometers per hour, which was higher than the legal speed limit of 12 kilometers per hour at the time, but some could reach 30 to 35 kilometers per hour in suitable conditions.
In all, 900 of these buses were used to transport troops to the rear during the First World War. The Imperial War Museum preserves one of these buses, the B 43, nicknamed Bill Ole after a famous contemporary cartoon character.
The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, London, holds the original B 340, which has now been restored.
Get carried away by the excitement and step back in time to the days when these old vehicles were roaming the streets, thanks to our kit models.
