Amerigo Vespucci model 1/100
OCCRE 15006
Here's another jewel of the sailing navy. A superb 1/100 scale model from OCCRE.
History of the Amerigo Vespucci.
Its mission was to accompany the sailing ship Cristoforo Colombo in training until the end of the Second World War. Its motto is: "Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera" ("Not he who begins, but he who perseveres").
The Amerigo Vespucci is a Marina Militare sailing ship, named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. She is based in La Spezia, Italy, and is used as a training ship.
In 1925, the Regia Marina commissioned two training ships designed by Lieutenant General Francesco Rotundi of the Italian Naval Corps of Engineers, inspired by the style of the large 74-gun ships of the line of the late 18th century. The first, the Cristoforo Colombo, was commissioned in 1928 and served the Italian navy until 1943.
With the exception of the Second World War, the Amerigo Vespucci has never ceased to be active. Most of her training cruises took place in European waters, but she also sailed in North and South America, as well as in the Pacific. In 2002, he embarked on a round-the-world voyage.
Her encounter in the Mediterranean with the American aircraft carrier USS Independence in 1962 was a memorable one. The aircraft carrier signaled "Who are you?" and replied was "Navigo Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy". The Americans then replied: "You're the most beautiful ship in the world".
