The Legacy of HMS Beagle: A Voyage Through History

Launched in 1820, the HMS Beagle is iconic for its role in scientific discovery. During its 1831 voyage, it served as the home and laboratory for Charles Darwin. This wooden model kit allows you to recreate the ship exactly as it was during its most famous survey mission, capturing the essence of 19th-century naval exploration.

The HMS Beagle was one of the most famous ships of its time, for a variety of reasons. The most famous of these was undoubtedly her naturalistic voyage of exploration, led by Commander Robert FitzRoy and with the young Darwin on board.

Launched on the Thames on May 11, 1820, she was built by the Woolwich shipyards. In July of the same year, as part of King George IV's coronation celebrations, she was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge.

In all, HMS Beagle made 3 major voyages. It was only on her second voyage that Darwin embarked. Of the nearly five years this second expedition lasted, Darwin spent three years and three months ashore and eighteen months at sea.
