A Ship Steeped in History

Built at the Echevarrieta y Larrinaga shipyard in Cádiz and launched on March 5, 1927, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano is a four-masted brigantine that has been training future officers of the Spanish Navy for nearly a century. It is named after the Basque navigator who, in 1522, completed the first circumnavigation of the globe begun by Magellan. Its Chilean sister ship, the Esmeralda, is also still in service.

With this model, Artesania Latina invites you to add a true legend of the seas to your collection.

This 1/140-scale reproduction is designed to offer a particularly rewarding building experience. Artesania Latina’s “Deluxe Pack” label guarantees the inclusion of high-end components that enhance the model’s realism once completed, while making it easier for the modeler to work on the most delicate parts.

Key features of this kit:

  • Precision structure: certified wood parts, laser-cut with high precision for a perfect assembly of the h hull, and superstructures.
  • Extensive fittings: a very large number of detailed parts made of fine wood, photo-etched brass, and die-cast metal for a striking level of realism.
  • Authentic sails: All cotton sails are supplied pre-sewn and ready to be rigged on the masts.
  • Premium finish: rigging lines in various diameters to maintain scale accuracy, and architectural details faithful to the original ship.

Assembly Guide

As always, Artesania Latina provides extremely detailed assembly instructions. The kit comes with plans and an assembly tutorial in the form of a printed manual and step-by-step videos available on YouTube. The printed manual includes hundreds of step-by-step photos to guide you from installing the first rib to the last shroud.

Set of 21 1/140-scale figures for the "Juan Sebastián de Elcano" sailboat model

Artesania Latina 22521F

A model without anyone on board is just a moored boat. As soon as you place a figure on the deck, the eye has a point of reference: it knows the height of a rail, the width of a hatch, and the actual size of the boat. It is the only accessory that alters the perception of scale, which is why it is the first to be added.

This set includes 21 crew fig figures s at a 1/140 scale, designed specifically for the Artesanía Latina model of the sailing ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” and for no other model in the line. Officers, sailors in work uniforms, men and women engaged in maneuvers or on deck duty: each figure is designed to bring the model to life without overwhelming it.

Figures 3D-printed: the level of detail required by the 1:140 scale

At a 1:140 scale, an adult measures approximately 12 millimeters. At this size, a molded fi figure e immediately loses the features that make it recognizable: the folds of a jacket or a cap, a tool in the hand, or the tilt of a body pulling on a rope.

The twenty-one figures in this set are 3D-printed, which is precisely what allows these details to be preserved. The forms remain distinct, the poses recognizable, and the sculpture provides a solid foundation for the brush. You retain complete freedom when painting; the sculpture is already complete.

LED Set for Lighting the "Juan Sebastián de Elcano" Sailboat (1/140 Scale)

Artesania Latina 22521L

Set of 24 warm-white LEDs, 3 mm in diameter—small enough to fit inside the deckhouses, skylights and portholes of a 1/140 model..

  • Flicker-free: steady light, not the flashing of a string of lights.
  • Resistor built into each LED: no calculations required, no additional components needed. Simply connect the LED to the battery holder and it will light up—no knowledge of electronics is required.
  • Bare pins, for soldering: connections are made using a soldering iron. Solder is included; the soldering iron is not included.
  • Designed for the “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” model (KBAL22521), whose cabins and portholes allow light to pass through.

Lighting Kit Contents

  • 24 3-mm warm-white LEDs with built-in resistors. The light sources. Warm light, like that found on board, and a 3-mm head that fits where a 5-mm LED would not.
  • 1 2 × AAA battery holder with switch. The main power source: allows you to turn the lights on and off without having to disassemble anything.
  • 1 CR2032 button-cell battery holder. The compact power source, for tight spaces.
  • 10 m red cable. The positive terminal. Long enough to run along bulkheads, around frames, and up the masts.
  • 10 m black cable. The negative terminal. Two colors to ensure you never reverse the polarity inside the hull.
  • 1 m of tin-coated wire. For soldering each connection. Supplied coiled inside the tube with a blue cap.
  • 700 mm Heat-shrink tubing. Insulates, protects, and conceals each solder joint. Learn how to use it.

Batteries and soldering iron not included.

Easy Ratline Template 3mm-pitch for model boats

Artesania Latina 27309

Three templates corresponding to the three widths of the shrouds as they taper toward the head.

3 mm pitch—the finest in the range. Designed for small scales, where the shrouds are close together and the spans are very short.

The shrouds are made in a single continuous run using zigzag stitching, rather than knot by knot at each crossing.

Spacers included: the template stays lifted off the shrouds, and the glue won’t stick it to your model.

This uses much less thread than tying knots, and all the shrouds are at the same height.

Package contents:

Three laser-cut templates made of plywood, corresponding to the three widths of the shrouds as they taper from the deck to the masthead. One is nearly parallel, and the other two are arranged in a fan shape, so that each rests against a different area of the rigging, rather than forcing you to work with a single width that doesn’t fit any of them well.

The two long edges of each template are cut into fine teeth, spaced 3 mm apart. This spacing is the key feature of the product: it determines the distance between one shroud and the next, from bottom to top. It’s actually engraved on the template itself; so, once you have several sets, you won’t need to measure a notch to know which one you’re using.

The set also includes small spacers that attach to each template. They keep the template slightly away from the struts, which is more important than it seems: when you apply a dot of glue at each intersection, the template won’t end up sticking to the model.

Instructions

You only need to read these instructions once to remember them forever.

  • Place the template behind the shrouds, with the teeth aligned with the first spreader knot.
  • Run a single thread in a zigzag pattern in front of the shrouds, letting it drop into each pair of teeth.
  • Check the alignment and apply a dot of glue at each intersection between a stay and the thread.
  • Once dry, remove the template and trim the ends flush on both sides.

This gives you a continuous row of knots spaced 3 mm apart—a task that used to take the time it would take to tie a dozen knots. And since the wire runs from one knot to the next without being tied or cut at each intersection, you use only a fraction of the amount of rigging wire you would otherwise have used.

Why 3 mm, and how do you choose the spacing?

The spacing between the rungs isn’t purely decorative: on a real boat, they’re the rungs of a ladder, spaced a little over a foot apart. Scale this down, and the spacing will adapt to the scale of your model. The smaller the scale, the closer together the rungs are.

3 mm is the finest pitch we offer, and it’s intended for small scales, where a 5 mm pitch would look like a rope ladder with rungs spaced one meter apart. If you’re building at a small scale and find yourself staring at a 5-mm template, wondering if it’s too coarse, this is the one you’ve been looking for.

The entire range of Artesania-Latina rope-making templates (see “Accessories” on this page):

  • 27309 — 3 mm — 151 × 100 mm — Small-scale models. The finest pitch in the line, and the newest model.
  • 27310 — 5 mm — 300 × 150 mm — The flagship model in the catalog and the most common choice.
  • 27311 — 6.5 mm — 300 × 150 mm — Large-scale models, with more widely spaced shrouds.
  • 27312 — 8 mm — 300 × 150 mm — The largest models, where the rigging is built nearly full-scale.

Feel free to measure the distance between two shrouds on your own model and compare it to the width of the templates: the spacing that looks correct on the plan is the one that will look correct on the finished boat.
