The San Juan felucca, “El Glorioso”
Small hull, large lateen sail: the felucca was the workhorse of Spain’s Mediterranean coast, used for coastal trade, fishing, mail and customs patrols. When Spain lost most of its merchant fleet after the independence of its American colonies, these humble sailing vessels reopened the sea routes to the Caribbean. Tradition credits the San Juan with the very first crossing, earning her the nickname “El Glorioso” (The Glorious One).
