The Greundiek story
The Greundiek was built in 1949 under the name "Hermann-Hans" at the Rickmers shipyard in Bremerhaven, and launched in January 1950. The vessel was one of the first to be built in Germany after the Second World War, and one of the first civilian ships to be fully welded. In 1965, the "Hermann-Hans" was sold to Henry Dölling, who renamed the ship "Rita Dölling", after his wife.
In 1986, the district of Stade bought the ship for the Grünendeich Maritime School, which organized on-board teaching units for ship mechanic training. In 1994, the Alter Hafen Stade e. V. purchased the Greundiek from the Stade district. After initial repair work in the dock of the Norderwerft shipyard in Hamburg, the vessel was docked in the port of Stade on April 22 of the same year. There, she was restored to seaworthiness until 2000. The ship, which is largely preserved in its original condition, is listed as a technical cultural monument in the Lower Saxony Register of Movable Cultural Monuments. At the end of January 2003, the Verein Alter Hafen Stade e. V. was awarded the State Prize of the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation for Monument Preservation for the restoration of the ship. The Verein Alter Hafen Stade e.V. has been maintaining and operating this unique museum ship, which is licensed for coastal navigation, with its volunteer members since 1994. Today, the MS Greundiek is used for all kinds of events and public cruises on the Elbe and in the Baltic Sea region. (Source: greundiek.de)
Kit production
The model was developed using all available drawings and numerous photos. The kit consists of a large hull in stable ABS with milled openings for portholes and scuppers. The deck and complete superstructure are made from ABS and wood parts. All parts are laser-engraved for a perfect fit. The many accessories complete the Greundiek's appearance. Although the original was used as the model for the kit and its equipment, the model also offers enough options to create your own version of the Greundiek.
This kit is designed for modellers with some experience. Instructions in German and French.
